“The multi-plane camera had levels and on each of these levels we put a big glass on it. We’d paint the foreground trees on the top one, the background, the house that you’re photographing, the characters come out and on the fourth level would be the sun and the sky. When the camera panned down through these levels, you got a third dimension effect.”

- Bob Broughton, Camera Effects Artist for Walt Disney Productions

Good, very good, its amazing how people used to do stuff before it was all done virtually.

On Thursday 2nd May 16 houses in Telegraph Hill, New Cross, will screen films onto their front windows from inside, creating a cinematic neighbourhood for passersby!
The event, called Light Houses, is part of the New Cross & Deptford Free Film Festival and is (as the name suggests) 100% free!
It was inspired by an original annual event called Lincoln West End Lights. Community cinema on your evening constitutional…

Liking the look of this, shame I’m not around.

We spoke to Andy from Renegade Brass Band, the 12-piece brassy hip-hop muthas from Steel  City

Hey, so how did you guys all first meet? And what made you want to start a band together? Introduce the band for us if you wouldn’t mind.

Ok, long story! A lot of the horns who started in the band - Nick and Christina (trombones) and Andy and James (trumpets), and alumni Tom (tenor sax), Tim (trombone) and Chris (trumpet) - knew each other through University music, and had discussed putting a brass band together for a while. I knew drummer Rory through the samba band we used to play in together, we met percussionist Dan at a salsa night, and Matt, our Sousa player, responded to a musicians ad online looking for a tuba player!

Since we began, we’ve added new members - after a few shows, we brought in Vex our MC, and former DJ Matt Von Badd - and brought in replacements for those who’ve moved on - our new trumpet player James, Jamie on tenor sax, and DJ Krook Kid on the wheels of steel. Amazingly with a 12-piece band, we’ve been able to keep a relatively stable line-up, but we have a few players we can call on in an emergency!
